Mid-October Grower Update: Biosecurity, Markets and Spring Planning
By Yield Australia ·
Mid-October 2026 update — sources checked 19 October. This roundup separates dated industry reports from practical planning suggestions. It is not a live price list, a local pest warning or a weather forecast.
Federal biosecurity legislation: check what applies
DAFF's 1 October announcement confirms that four new biosecurity instruments commenced that day, replacing corresponding 2016 instruments. Businesses involved in importing or handling goods under biosecurity control should review the official guidance and statements of changes. Do not assume that every nursery procedure or interstate movement rule has changed.
Fire-ant response: keep the location and date clear
In its 13 October statement about Strathfield, Sydney, DAFF reports that a confirmed red imported fire-ant nest was treated and that investigations were continuing. The statement says there was no evidence of spread beyond the site at that time. This is not a report of an infestation in Werribee South. Check current jurisdictional advice before moving regulated plants, soil or equipment.
Onion market development is progressing — outcomes are not guaranteed
AUSVEG's 13 October report covers an Australian onion grower and exporter mission to Spain from 5–9 October. Its 19 October trade update calls for passage of the Australia–EU agreement. Prospective market access is not the same as enacted tariff relief, a confirmed order or a farmgate price increase.
Weed technology: research, not proven nursery performance
The MT25014 physical weed-control project is testing mechanical, electrical and laser approaches under Australian conditions. Its listed project period is July 2026 to August 2029. It is research to follow, not a completed result or an endorsement of equipment for your crop.
Practical checks for the next planting window
- Use the Weather Dashboard for current conditions and forecasts; inspect soil workability before committing machinery or transplanting.
- Confirm your actual irrigation allocation and restrictions with your water authority. No local allocation percentage is assumed here.
- Obtain current, delivered supplier quotes for fertiliser, fuel and freight. Earlier winter prices are not October quotes.
- Check planting dates, tray requirements and customer specifications with the grower-led nursery team. Read our 16 October nursery capability update for the owner-confirmed 144-cell tray and third sowing-room developments.
