2025 Winter Brassica Season — Varieties to Watch

By Yield Australia Agronomy Team ·

Winter is prime brassica season in Victoria, and getting your variety selection right can make the difference between a good crop and a great one. At Yield Australia, we trial extensively to ensure we're recommending varieties that perform in real Australian conditions.

Cauliflower

This season, we're seeing strong demand for mid-maturity cauliflower varieties that offer good self-wrap and weight consistency. Growers in the Werribee South and Bacchus Marsh regions have reported excellent results with varieties offering 75-85 day maturity windows.

Key considerations for 2025:

  • Select varieties with proven cold tolerance for the expected La Niña-influenced winter
  • Self-wrapping types reduce labour costs — critical in the current workforce environment
  • Consider staggered plantings across 2-3 varieties to extend your harvest window

Broccoli

Broccoli remains a staple for Victorian growers, with domestic demand staying strong year-round. We're recommending varieties with tight bead formation and good side-shoot potential for extended harvests.

Cabbage

For winter cabbage, focus on varieties with dense heads and good storage life. Chinese cabbage (wombok) continues to see growing demand from foodservice and Asian grocery channels — if you're not already growing it, now is the time to consider adding it to your program.

Order Early

Brassica seedling demand peaks in March-April for winter planting. We strongly recommend placing orders early to secure your preferred varieties and planting dates. Contact our team on 1300 094 353 to discuss your winter program.
